A towbar, i.e. a ball hitch, is a mechanical coupling device used to tow trailers or install devices such as a bicycle carrier mounted on the ball of the towbar. Due to the ball system (i.e. the tip), we distinguish towbars: fixed (the ball is permanently welded), unscrewed, detachable horizontally or vertically. The manufacturer of the towbar is obliged to obtain type approval for each towbar model produced. The regulations for the approval of towbars are contained in the UNECE Regulation R55 and (previously) also in Directive No. 94/20 EU
